WELCOME TO THE G17!We are a NON-SPONSORED COMMITTEE

What is the G17

The G17 is South Pasadena High School’s Grad Night Committee, a standing event committee of the SPHS PTSAssociation. The SPHS PTSA Executive Board appointed Helga Kuhn as the 2016-2017 Grad Night chairperson, with 22 committee members. The goal was to review and evaluate the success of the just prior Grad Night (2016) with attendees and chaperones and to plan and coordinate all aspects of Grad Night for 2017.

The 2017 Grad Night Committee known as “The G17” presented a solid proposal based on senior/student surveys, meetings, research, interviews, location availability and fiscal responsibility. The proposal met every goal but was unable to provide the event on the day of graduation Friday, June 9, 2017. It is an unusual year for SPHS and most Graduations and Grad Nights are being held on this Thursday.

The PTSA was not willing to compromise on the day of the event as proposed and therefore declined the proposal. The PTSA suggested and recommended a Non-Sponsored event by the G17. After the PTSA Boards decision, the Seniors were made aware of the only options available, and that it would not be on the day of graduation in 2017. Based on the Seniors comments and response to the survey the numbers supported and continue to support the deision made by the G17 seniors and committee to move forward with planning this historical event for the 2017 seniors.

Why is this happening?

Seniors have asked to go to Disneyland for years and their requests fell on deaf ears. Many believed that SPHS was banned from Disneyland for life. The G17 was informed that, that was not true. The class of 2017 wanted to experience Grad Night at an amusement park like many other seniors in Southern California and liketheir parents did. The class 2017 is hoping that they will pave the way for the seniors of 2018 and that they will be able to go on the day of their graduation. The G17 apologizes for some of the inconveniences for the dates of the events, but these were the only dates available. Other schools plan a year in advance, something that we will be sharing with the class of 2018.

What is Grad Nite?

Grad Night was created in 1958 by parents who were seeking a safe means for seniors to celebrate after graduation because of a fatal accident.

In 1957 three (3) teens celebrated graduation at a party by drinking and were involved in a car accident on their way home which resulted in serious injury and one fatality.

Past Grad Night events have included trips to Disneyland, Mount Asia, Harbor Cruises, Fanta Sea Cruise,Speed Zone and most recently Castle Park in Riverside, CA.
